Happy Birthday to the East Devonport Child and Family Learning Centre (CFLC) who celebrated 10 years last week. I congratulate Jenny Mountney and her team, on the supportive and inclusive environment they have created engaging the East Devonport families. East Devonport Primary School and the Child and Family Learning Centre work together to provide a range of engaging programs for children (aged birth to 5) and their parents. Programs are held at the CFLC or on the Primary School site in the Launching into Learning building (the yellow building before you go to Kinder). Not sure, just drop into the office and we will show you around.
Thank you to the staff (Lisa Welling, Luke Dolbey, Tegan Sharman, and practicum student Luke Rowden) for attending the Year 5/6 Camp, which was busy and very educational. We all learnt new things about the land we live on, the past and our future (wind power).
As we complete term 3, I would like to thank members of our school community who have volunteered their time to support our students. Last week, students were acknowledged for the extra activities that were held out of school hours over term 2 and term 3:
- The East Devonport Soccer teams with parent coaches Anna Cullis, Prue Marshall, Martyn Mann, Dannielle Weeks, Karen Bennet who held training every Thursday after school and coached on Saturdays. During the assembly on Friday students were issued with certificates and medals.
- Georgia Leary, Darcy Cullis and Jack Williams (some of our previous students) who have assisted with the East Devonport Soccer teams.
- Alison Jarman donated an hour after school on Mondays to the Drama Club. Last Thursday, members competed at the Deloraine Drama Festival. Alison wrote and directed the play, supported by Mrs Karen Whish-Wilson, putting on a polished performance.
- Paul Campbell (from the North West Thunder Basketball Team) and students from Latrobe High School, come every Monday to put 10 Year 5/6 boys through drills to improve their skills. The Basketball team played last weekend, coached by Karen Whish-Wilson and supported by family and friends.
Today the 2/3S and 2/3G are on excursion to Launceston to visit the Queen Victoria Muesuem and Art Gallery and Planetarium.
I wish everyone a safe, enjoyable holiday break. Term 4 commences on Monday 11th of October.
Reminder: Term 4 students must wear a hat outside as part our our sun smart policy.
Well done Gideon and Immy for their assistance in the CFLC celebrations last week. Today they were presented with a thank you gift from Jenny Mountney on behalf of the East Devonport CFLC.
As part of the CFLC birthday celebrations here are a couple of comparisons of our students

In Kinder we are busy little learners. We have enjoyed a range of activities including:
- alliteration in our sounds
- dramatic play
- chalk writing and drawing in the sunshine
- sensory play

Prep/1AS sorted smarties into their colours and then used the data they collected to represent it on a graph. We wanted to find out if all the little boxes of smarties had the same colours and amounts in them - we will find out this week when we compare our graphs.
Over the coming months you may see TV commercials, posters in our school and bus advertising. This is part of an awareness campaign, that is aimed at stopping offensive behaviour towards staff in Tasmanian schools. The simple message coming out of the Campaign is that disrespect in schools is crossing the line and that is not ok.
Our school is committed to providing a safe and secure workplace for all staff, as well as a safe environment for students to learn. We are working to eliminate any instances of offensive behaviour from adults directed towards school staff.
Most school community members respect schools and staff. However, at times schools deal with unacceptable adult behaviour, which may include aggressive, threatening, or violent behaviour. This can occur in the presence of students.
This Campaign has been developed by the Department of Education which included involvement from Principals, school staff and parents.
Some of the key messages from the campaign are:
· Everyone has the right to feel respected and safe at school, including school staff. It’s not just a courtesy, it’s the law.
· The best outcomes for children come when schools and parents work together respectfully.
· Respectful behaviour in our schools is everyone’s right and everyone’s responsibility.
If you would like to discuss any part of the campaign or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact marketing@education.tas.gov.au
Big Book Focus: Pirate Polly
Students enjoyed last week's big book, Pirate Polly. We focused on different reading strategies daily and completed a short writing task focused around a problem in the story and how this problem was solved. We also learnt to sing a short song from the story and made pirate hats.

Maths – Number
Students were given a number and asked to show how many different ways to show their number. Below are some student work samples.

In 2/3 Scott we have been using the ‘voice memo’ tool on our iPads to record ourselves reading. It has been interesting to listen back to the recordings to see how we sound! We have used these to help us identify future reading goals.
On Wednesday 8 September the 5-6 students started an exciting adventure when they headed off to camp. Click on the links below to check out some of the reports from students in 4-5 Sherriff.
Our daily rate for attendance so far this year is 86% Our goal by the end of the year is to have an attendance rate of 90%
Please ensure your child comes to school every day. If you are having difficulty getting your child to school please contact Karen Whish-Wilson on 6427 8932.
This term, Mrs Woodberry, Mrs Whish and Mrs Glumac were secretly awarding bonus points for house members points for attendance, and wearing school uniforms. These bonus points were added to the Thumbs Up Card term tallies. We are pleased to announce that Empress House is the winning house. They will participate in a fun afternoon with their fellow house members on Friday afternoon. This means that each of our school houses has won a term challenge. I wonder which house will take out a second victory in Term 4?
Primary Schools Basketball Tournament
On the weekend, East Devonport Primary School played in the Primary Schools Basketball Tournament in the 5/6 boys competition. We played three games on Saturday starting at an early 8.00am and our last game being 6pm. We also had a game midday on Sunday. Although we came second in all of our games, the boys played tremendously as a team and show great sportsmanship, grit and determination, never giving up. All boys played their best and the comradery with our boys, and supporters was fabulous. A huge thank you to all the families who came to support their children and also to Mike Lizotte for coming to support and Paul Campbell and Josie from Latrobe High who both came to a game to get behind the boys. The boys represented our school so well and we are proud of their efforts.
Congratulations to Alison Jarman and her Drama Club participants for their wonderful production on Thursday night at the Deloraine Drama Festival. They all rose to the occasion and gave an exceptional performance enjoyed by all in the audience. Well done.
Passports have been collected and validated by Jesse Brennan from the Children’s University and we can proudly announce that we have 13 students who have accumulated enough hours and will therefore participate in a graduation ceremony at the Paranaple Convention Centre on Wednesday 27th October from 10.30am - 12.30pm. Congratulations to; Hayley, Shani, Laylah, Ayden, Millie, Shelby, Eliza, Elijah, Jack, Noah, TJ, Dakota, and Jonah. For those students who have tried hard and have collected some hours but not quite enough to graduate this year, these hours can go towards next year’s graduation. An invitation letter has been sent home to students today.
At the end of each term we have a challenge for our students to complete in the last week of term. This week our students will be trying to decide what baby photo goes with some of our volunteering staff members. A powerpoint with the answers will be shared with each class on Friday and those students who may have guessed correctly, will win a prize. If any parents are also interested in entering, come and fill in an entry form at the office.
