AEU Stop Work Meeting
The Australian Education Union has called a stop work meeting tomorrow (Wednesday 28th of September) from 8:30am to 10:30am. Staff and Teacher Assistants may be at the stop work meeting held at Devonport Oval. We request that parents drop their children off at school FROM 10:30am to ensure that staff have returned from the stop work meeting. I apologise for any inconvenience this may occur.
Coming Soon: new Department for Education, Children and Young People
Recently we sent a letter home with students from Secretary Tim Bullard regarding the changes from 1 October 2022. The Department of Education will join with some functions from the Department of Communities to form 'The Department for Education, Children and Young People'. Schools will continue as normal. Over time you will notice a new email address and branding appearing on materials sent from your school. You can keep up-to-date on how this work is progressing by visiting the public website at www.education.tas.gov.au/new-department/.
School Satisfaction Survey
We would like to thank all families that participated in the 2022 School Satisfaction Survey. Our lucky draw winners were:
1st | Rebecca Bell |
2nd | Paige Wells |
3rd | Jodie McPherson |
Your prizes are available for collection from the office.
Footy Colours Day
Footy Colours Day was a huge success with a range of sports and teams on show. A huge thank you to the volunteers - Brett Smith, Chris Young, Sally Young and John Febey from the East Devonport Football Club who run two clinics on the day. Please see photos in this newsletter edition taken by some of our classroom teachers.
NWPSSA Interprimary Athletics
Congratulations to the students in Years 3 to Year 6 who represented the school at the NWSPPA Athletics Carnival last Tuesday (Years 3/4) and Wednesday (Years 5/6). They represented the school with outstanding effort, respect and sportpersonship.

End of Term
This Friday is the last day of term 3. Term 4 will commence on Monday 17th of October.
The Rotary Club of Devonport South East will be on the BBQs, cooking the delicious sausages that we all love. We thoroughly enjoy meeting all the Rotary members who engage with our students in a warm and caring manner. The term will end with the Assembly at 1.50pm, in the GP (General Purpose) Hall.
Finally I wish everyone a restful, safe and sun-filled break before we return for Term 4 starting on Monday 17th of October.
School Flags
We would like to thank Premier Jeremy Rockliff for our Tasmanian Flag.
Variety - The Children's Charity
Variety will be coming to East Devonport Primary School on Monday October 17th (first day back for Term 4). They will be bringing 15-20 of their cars to show the students, staff, and wider community. They will arrive at approximately 9.30am and will stay until 10.15am. All welcome to come along and view these cars but it is requested that NO parking in the staff carpark by anyone but the school staff. This is firstly for the safety of our students and secondly for easy access for the cars to enter and leave. Your assistance with this would be much appreciated.

Cobi, Jack, Elijah, Seth and Jesse travelled to Brisbane to compete as part of the Tasmanian team. Yesterday was a good day for the team. There was a win against the ACT (2-1) and a draw against northern NSW (2-2). We look forward to hearing a report from the team on their return to school next term!

Congratulations Empress - Winner of Acknowledgement Afternoon
This afternoon Empress students enjoyed an afternoon of activities using the fun arcade games set up by the House Captains. They were very proud winners. Who will win next terms acknowledgement afternoon?
Outdoor learning is fun in Kinder!

On Thursday 15 September our Kinder students braved the wild and woolly weather to travel to Wilmot Farm School. Students participated in a range of activities and had a very busy day.

Last Friday we held our Footy Colours Day. Students had the opportunity to dress in their favourite team colours. We raised $82.00 which is being donated to the Fight Cancer Foundation - Footy Colours Day. We were fortunate enough to have a team of volunteers from the East Devonport Football Club along to run a football clinic for us.

Who would want to do maths on a Sunday? Ashlee, Juno, Ayden and Jennie would. Maths Relay is a competition where teams of four students compete against teams from other schools in trying to answer as many maths questions as they can in forty-five minutes. Questions are worth between five and twenty points depending on the degree of difficulty. Our team was one of twenty teams who participated in the Northwest Maths relay on Sunday. They performed fabulously and gained a score of 90 points. The winning team scored 110 points so we believe we came fifth overall. We are extremely proud of their achievement and it shows we are up there with the best. Well done.

We have had a busy, but fun filled term in 1S. Starting off the term with book week, lots of awesome music performances, building our gross motor skills every Monday, the water orientation program, our Fire Safety program with firefighter Craig and an excursion to Wings Wildlife Park.

As part of our Brain Boot Camp sessions we headed to the skate park to have a skateboarding demonstration by a familiar face - Sam Jordan. We then got to have a go ourselves and try a range of other games. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and having a go at skateboarding, even if we weren't at all confident to do so.

Miss Scott assigned her class with a reading challenge to take part in over the course of 3 weeks of Term 3. Some of the things students had to do were: read to a sibling, pet or teddy at home, draw a picture of a character from a book they read, and read outside at lunch or recess. Congratulations to Noah who completed to reading challenge and won a prize!
We invite our families to join in the fun and try to use your maths skills to order our randomly selected staff (see images below) from tallest to shortest in height. Bring in your answer sheet to win a prize! Our lucky staff members are Miss Tegan Sharman, Miss Julie Morice, Mrs Gail McLaren, Ms Jackie Sherriff, Ms Kay Fitzgerald, Mrs Kylie Clinton, Mrs Coral Crossin, Mr Luke Dolbey, Miss Kayla Simpson, Mrs Karen Graham.

3M celebrated 100% attendance last week with a zooper dooper.
Our students have many wonderful personal recounts from their experiences at Hagley Farm. They are located on the internal sliding glass door near the office if you would like to read them.

6C have been busy the past couple of weeks with a variety of students practising for the inter schools basketball championships, working on their reading for the term 4 Reader's Cup and getting organised to participate in the maths relay which occurred on the weekend.
We welcomed Miss Stolp, a year 4 prac teacher, who will be joining us at the beginning of term 4 to perfect her skills.
Good luck goes to Jesse and Elijah from our class and Jack, Cobi and Seth from 6D who headed to Queensland for a futsal competition – I know they are very excited about the trip and we can’t wait to hear all about it.
A special mention goes to all those in 6C who got off their chairs and helped the African group ‘Wala means Love’ by playing instruments, learning new ‘disco’ moves and just moving and gooving to the music.

Primary School Basketball Tournament
On the weekend we had our girls year 6 basketball team representing East Devonport Primary School in a tournament. Congratulations to Tayla, Ashley, Indy, Lola, Mia B, Kyiesha, Indee, and Shani who were Runner-Up team in the C Division girls grandfinal. The girls were so supportive with each other and played with determination and gusto. Everyone gave 100 percent. Thank you to the parents for your support. We would also like to extend our thanks to Reece High School who loaned us basketball tops for the event.

Last week the Crescendo Junior Band won the Instrumental Ensemble section for Under 12s. Well done to Natte who played brilliantly!
Our whole school attendance is currently 80%. Our aim is for consistent whole school attendance running at 90%. Congratulations to those classes who have had 100% in the last two weeks.
Congratulations to the students who made our NWPSSA team.

Hillcrest Affected Area Recovery Committee
Community Impacts Survey
The Hillcrest Affected Area Recovery Committee (HAARC) has been formed to be a point of contact for the Devonport and wider North-West community following the Hillcrest Primary School tragedy.
What is the HAARC’s role?
The HAARC is here to listen to members of the community impacted by the Hillcrest tragedy, to hear about the challenges they may be facing and to help design and lead community recovery activities.
The HAARC will use this information to advocate to Government on the community’s behalf.
Information about the HAARC and support that is available to the community is available on the HAARC’s webpage.
Community Impacts Survey
As a first step, the HAARC has launched a short survey to give community members an opportunity to share how they are coping as the one-year mark of the tragedy approaches. The input of School families would be welcomed and valued.
The survey can be accessed at this link. You can also request a paper copy from the School office.
The survey will close on 21 October 2022.
Get in touch
If you want to reach out to the HAARC to talk about your experiences or if you have any ideas you would like to share about ways to help the community, please email haarc@dpac.tas.gov.au or write to the HAARC at:
